The Storm U12 Mixed program is a very important training group with the Storm. Within in this group we offer age appropriate training and skills development to insure future success in the sport of field hockey. All players are welcome in this group. We have a strong Under 9 program with parent coaches. All boys and girls in this training program receive an excellent introduction to the sport and the opportunity to grow their skills.
The U12 mixed players meet on Sundays from 8-10 am at Los Altos High School. Please check the calendar for schedule changes.
Mouthguard, shin guards, gym shoes, water bottle and a stick are necessary. Sticks will be provided to beginners to get them started.
We have our seasons year round. Tournaments are usually in the Spring between April and June. If there are ample players, we structure IN HOUSE League games for this group of players.
We have a great core group of coaches for this age group who are parents in the program and have vast youth field hockey experience. This group also receives youth technical skills sessions.
Why should my child play field hockey?
Field hockey is a great International game that is played very passionately in Asia, Europe, South America, and Central America. In America it has the image of being a girls' sport. The Storm is changing that! The game teaches great hand-eye coordination, team play, and will keep your child in shape. The game requires a lot of running and stamina, but can be taught to anyone. The game is a great complement to the athlete who plays soccer, lacrosse, or ice hockey.
What equipment is needed?
All players need shin guards, mouth guards, running shoes, a field hockey stick, and a willing attitude. Players will be able to purchase equipment from our sponsors or the Storm club. Equipment is very affordable.
Can kids get hurt?
As with any sport, injuries can occur. Of course, players must have a mouth guard and shin guards to play, and this protects players a lot. Everyone is taught on how to avoid dangerous situations, but sometimes a high stick can pop up into a child's face. However, as long as players are aware of what they are doing and what's happening around them, injuries rarely occur.
Will children need insurance?
All players should be members of US Field Hockey and pay the annual dues. Players can sign up at webpoint.usfieldhockey.com. This will provide for facility insurance. Each player should also have their private medical insurance.
What are the parents' roles?
Like all youth sports, all parents are highly encouraged to participate in Storm. During the season, parents can help keep things organized and flowing smooth. If you are interested in volunteering, please speak to an Advisory Board member about your interests.
